Bridgwater Cricket Club – Club History

Bridgwater Cricket Club was formed in 1839 by a group of local worthies who wanted to partake in this Gentlemanly pastime.

Records show that matches were played at various sites around the Town until 1925, when both the Cricket Club and Bowls Club moved to purpose built facilities at The Parks on Durleigh Road.

BCC thrived with an expanding high class fixture list that included the local Taunton rivals and many of the top Clubs in the Bristol, Bath and North Somerset area and Sammy Woods and Wally Luckes, both Somerset stalwarts, played for the Club for many years.

With the advent of League cricket in 1973, Bridgwater were founder members of the Somerset League and held the rather dubious distinction of having finished runners up on more occasions than any other Club, until disaster stuck in 1986 with relegation from the Premier to Division 1.

They immediately bounced back, winning the Division 1 title in 1987 and on a roll were crowned Premier Division Champions in 1988.

When League cricket was reorganised into WEPL in in 2000, Bridgwater won the Somerset Division.  They then won the Bristol and Somerset Division in 2005 after three seasons of runners up, then in 2006 won promotion to Premier 1 as runners up.

They have remained in WEPL Premier 1 for the past 16 years, finishing runners up in 2011 and enjoyed the marvellous achievement of having both the 1st and 2nd X1 crowned Premier League Champions in 2012.

The Club have remained a force in League cricket in Somerset and WEPL with the top three teams all playing at the highest level and The Parks has a fine reputation for hospitality as well as noisy and partisan support!
