Priston Cricket Club was founded in 1984, when just 4 away matches were played. After several nomadic years, we got the chance to have our own pitch at Priston Mill, starting each season only after the silage was removed from the outfield.
Some years later we moved up to the village to a 4- acre field behind the church, which was then owned by the parents of our opening bowler. It is now leased for a peppercorn rent from our neighbours.
With builders, engineers and tree surgeons among the members, we built a pavilion from a large garden shed (courtesy of a grant from the Foundation for Sport and Arts), maintain much of our own machinery and look after the hedges and boundary trees.
As a ‘grassroots’ club, Priston is nearer the subsoil than most, playing only ‘friendly’ matches. Until recently the home games were timed affairs, but 35 overs now prevails. Eligibility is limited to parish residents plus a few whom the AGM has invited to play because of their active interest in the Club. Women and girls are very welcome to join us; one of our fastest bowlers last year was a 14-year-old schoolgirl. Youngsters are encouraged, so that the current age range of playing members is 13 to 92. Social members are able to enjoy our legendary cricket teas with the players.
Priston CC plays an active role in the social life of the village, staging pantomimes, quizzes, dinners and discos, as well as organising the annual Great Priston Duck Race at New Year. We also support the Priston May Day fair. For 2023 there are 18 confirmed matches, including a tour ( to Devon) for the first time for several years.
Priston CC is affiliated to Somerset Cricket Association, and adopts its safeguarding policies.
